Static consolidation work on the 'Diga Rizzo Sud' in the Port of Trieste

Client: Autorità di Sistema Portuale del Mar Adriatico Orientale

Services in this project:
  • Technical design
  • Final design
  • HSE Management

The aim of the project was to restore the work to its original integrity, respecting its historical identity.

The design and modelling phases were anticipated by a careful study of the geomorphological conditions of the site where the infrastructure in subject is located and its state of conservation.

After the data acquisition, according to the BIM methodology, the actual state was reconstructed both from a geometric and constructive point of view. Indeed, all the elements of the breakwater have been modelled (artificial boulders, perimetral paving elements of wall face and original paving blocks) respecting the real configuration and the quality of the materials, highlighting all the degraded parts.

Among the forecast interventions, the following are reported:

  • anchorage of the perimetral paving elements to the breakwater body by means of galvanised and concrete-embedded steel bars;
  • consolidation of the sea-side face by means of core drilling and insertion of steel bars and mortar;
  • consolidation of the submerged boulders, both seaside and harbour side, by stitching the whole head;
  • horizontal nailing of the damaged portions of the boulders;
  • Removal and restoration of the original paving blocks dislodged, including the substrate;
  • restoration of bollards and fendering;
  • restoration of crumbling and reef resurfacing on the North Head.
