The renovation project targeted the first and third floors of an existing building located in an industrial area in the municipality of Bresso, part of the Zambon Science Park.

The work also included the construction of new laboratories and associated support spaces for:

  • the production of starting materials (cell banks), intermediates/reagents and sterile medicinal preparations for gene and cell therapy as defined in the Advanced Therapies Medicinal Products (ATMP) guidelines and Annex II of the EU Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) guidelines;
  • the handling of genetically modified micro-organisms of biosafety classes 2 (BSL2) and 3 (BSL3) in a confined environment;
  • the option (in a dedicated and controlled area) of storing and handling radon.

The general layout and conditioning installations allow simultaneous processing of multiple batches of both gene therapy and cell therapy preparations. The laboratories have been designed and validated in compliance with international GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) guidelines (Annex II of the EU GMP Directive). The facility is ready to accommodate potential new technologies in the form of new equipment and/or additional and innovative research in the future.
