I-TOS for intermodal rail terminal management

Client: Interterminal Quadrante Servizi S.r.l

Services in this project:
  • Software development

Interporto Interminal Quadrante Servizi in Verona is located at the junction of the Brenner-Modena and Milan-Venice railways and between the A22 and A4 motorways. It offers direct access to the main European markets. It is even more significant considering it interconnects the Mediterranean and Scandinavian-Mediterranean routes of the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T).

Since 2021, we have supplied Interterminal with the I-TOS (Intermodal-Terminal Operating System) solution. This software product is part of the SEAHORSE suite for the integrated management of logistics processes in Intermodal Transport.

I-TOS can be extended with the Vehicle Booking System (VBS) module, which further reduces the time required for scheduled delivery and collection of goods in precise time slots.

We were in charge of the digitisation of the following processes:

  • train travel management (composition, recalls, waste management, units and goods transported, Interchange, CIM)
  • management of train loading/unloading activities, handling and storage of units
  • gate in/out management (vehicle and driver acceptance, Interchange printing, unit exit confirmation)
  • management of yard stock and advance notice of arrival
  • reporting to support invoicing and KPIs
  • wagon records with the registration of the last completed trip.
  • support of the main EDIGES messages: S30 (train composition), S10 (trip reservation - booking), S11 (cancellation of trip reservation), S38 (confirmation of arrival and train composition), S40 (UTI pick-up notification), S50 (confirmation of unit picked up by haulier), S25 (confirmation of unit load on a train).
  • the mobile app to support the verification of train composition, damage detection of loading units and their positioning in the yard.

The main macro figures involved in digitising processes to track the entry and exit of trucks, the loading and unloading of trains, the life cycle of Intermodal Transport Units (ITUs) and supporting the production of all necessary documentation in electronic formats.

  • surface area: 54,500 m²
  • track surface area: 11,700 m²
  • number of tracks: 3 "flush" tracks measuring 600 metres each
  • trains: an average of 24 train sets per week (13,814 intermodal out of a total of 15,010)
  • goods: 30 million tons in 2022: 22 on road and 8 on rail
  • connections: Germany (69%), Italy (19.5%), Denmark (3.5%), the Netherlands (2.5%), Belgium (2.5%) and the Czech Republic (3%)
  • type of transport: semitrailers (75%), swap bodies (15%) and containers (10%)
  • efficiency index +70% compared to other intermodal terminals in the European Quadrant
